DF-95 Tuning

For now I am referring folks to tuning videos on line, there are many and also mood any different opinions on what adjustments to the rig are important.

Ken Read's DF-95 tuning seminar video is good, but there are others.....

As I develop my own opinions, I will let you know, right here!

Ok, here is a start:

  1. Before you start going crazy messing with the rig, the skipper can easily be stopping the boat by steering to much. No amount of rig tuning will over come the skipper stopping the boat by putting the breaks on (steering a lot turns the rudder into a break). Let the boat sail!
  2. The DF-95 Assembly instructions say to place the mast adjustment (on the deck) a couple of marks forward of full aft. Most folks are setting the mast full aft.
  3. The Df-95 does not like the sails trimmed tight, the main likes to be back of the boom near the deck rail, and the jib also near the deck rail.
  4. The DF-95 likes to be sailed with a good deal of twist in both sails. If you do not know what "twist" is ask one of the experienced sailors to show you.
    1. Main twist is controlled by the boom vang. On the DF-95 the Boomvang is adjusted with the two thumb wheels on the forward end of the boom. Boom up = more twist, Boom down = less twist.
    2. Jib twist is controlled by the jib boom topping lift (the line from the back of the jib boom to the top of the mast). Same as the Mainsail - back of Jib boom up = more twist, back of jib boom down = less twist.
