Dragon Boat Regatta

The 5th annual Dragon Boat Regatta is coming to the Long Wharf Pier on Satuday, July 23, 2022! 

Canal Dock's annual Dragon Boat Regatta is a community event where individuals and local businesses come together to compete in a fun and engaging race. The event helps to support Canal Dock and our free public programs.

Dragon Boating is super fun, high spirited, and a great team-building experience! It’s easy to learn, extremely safe, and an activity where all can paddle and/or compete side by side towards the same goal. Regardless how old, young, big or little: once a paddler is in stroke, they are contributing to their team.  Specators also encouraged to attend!

What is a Dragon Boat?  Essentially, it’s a 40 foot canoe with up to 20 paddlers, a drummer to maintain the cadence, and a sweep or steers-person. The paddlers sit side-by-side in rows of two, and work together in unison to propel the boat for recreation, fitness, or competition. The beating of the drum controls the cadence of the boat.

Create a team of friends, co-workers or perfect strangers and compete in this ancient tradition now in New Haven Harbor. Standard teams are 16 paddlers (minimum but up to 20 total) & one drummer. Most teams end up needing alternates to fill in for practice and/or racing, so plan for 20 for a full boat. No experience necessary to participate.

$2000 per boat to enter. Individuals looking for a team are still encouraged to reach out! We will do our best to find you a seat. Entry fees and proceeds from the event will support Canal Dock and our free youth and public programs.
