Job Description

Crew Haven is looking for a patient, highly-driven, focused tutor who is highly skilled in providing instruction for high school level courses such as mathematics and science as well as English and history. The ideal candidate will have an understanding of the needs of students and will be adept at building relationships that enable students to develop their strengths. This position is responsible to provide program participants with academic instruction and assistance with homework assignments and additional academic support. The tutor is expected to be available for students Monday - Thursday from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm and on Fridays from 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm. Roles & Responsibilities

  • Reviewing classroom curricula topics and assignments.

  • Lead one-on-one or small group lessons that cater to the needs and goals of our students.

  • Offer suggestions on additional resources and address other relevant needs as they arise.

  • Provide regular communication / updates to the Program Coordinator.

  • Assisting students with various assignments, including homework, projects, test preparation, papers, research and other academic tasks.

  • Working with students to help them fully understand key concepts, especially those taught in the classroom.

  • Teach skills to improve academic performance, including study strategies, note taking skills and test taking strategies.

  • Providing students with positive and constructive feedback.

  • Offering feedback and reporting progress of students to the Programs Manager.

  • Reach out to teachers and school guidance counselors to keep track of students' academic progress.


Requirements & Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of specific subject areas and expertise in test preparation.

  • Open availability from Monday - Thursday from 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm and on Fridays from 2:00 pm - 5:30 pm.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to collaborate with Program Manager as well as to clearly explain challenging academic material to students.

  • Patience and compassion for the development of students.

  • Ability to work with a diverse population within the 14 to 21 age range.

  • Must possess a relevant combination of education and work experience.

  • Knowledge of academic and vocational resources.

  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Must be well organized and demonstrate a positive, problem-solver approach.

  • Ability to motivate and encourage students to improve their academic performance.

  • Bachelor's Degree required

  • CTState 7-12 Teaching Certificate preferred

  • Must be a team player with a willingness to be flexible.
